Senior Medicare Patrol Volunteers Needed

Our RSVP program has just received a small grant to start a new program to help curb Medicare fraud and waste in Champaign, Douglas and Piatt Counties!   We are now part of the Senior Medicare Patrol Program.  You may have seen local television advertising lately about the program.

We are excited to become a part of this national initiative and to be able to offer our RSVP members a new opportunity to make a difference in the lives of fellow Medicare beneficiaries and to help protect our taxpayer dollars.   Volunteers will receive thorough training on the Senior Medicare Program, Medicare Basics, and Medicare fraud and abuse and will be invited to attend update trainings as they occur.

What is the Senior Medicare Patrol Program?
The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program empowers consumers to prevent healthcare fraud.  Volunteers help people with Medicare and Medicaid to:
1. PROTECT themselves from Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse.
2. DETECT Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse.
3. REPORT Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse.

What can RSVP volunteers do?
Volunteers can serve in a number of ways to help educate their neighbors to stop fraud:
• Give presentations on healthcare fraud to church groups, senior centers, etc.
• Provide information on healthcare fraud at health fairs or other community events.
• Distribute flyers and brochures to senior housing sites, libraries or businesses in your area.
• Write a letter to the editor or a newspaper article.
• Help people report fraud when it occurs.
To learn more about how you can become involved as an RSVP Senior Medicare Patrol Program volunteer, please contact us at (217) 359-6500 (ask for Karen or Marsha) or  rsvpchampaign@gmail.com.

Break the Slence.  Report elder abuse.  It is everyone’s problem.

As older adults, we deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.  We need to have control of our own money and personal decisions.  We deserve to live without fear or intimidation.

When that doesn’t happen for people living in their own homes (or someone else’s home) in Champaign County or Piatt County, the Senior Protective Services staff may be able to help.

Elder abuse can be physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; passive neglect; willful deprivation; or financial exploitation of someone age 60 or older by someone with whom the older adult has an on-going relationship.  Suspected abuse can be reported by the person feeling abused or by anyone else with an interest in an older person’s welfare.  We can accept anonymous reports.

Staff will investigate all allegations received.  If abuse is substantiated, staff can provide an in-home assessment, counseling, advocacy, practical assistance in obtaining benefits and services, coordination with other agencies, and monitoring.

Eligibility: Age 60 or older living in a home setting.  To report concerns about treatment of older adults in nursing homes and other licensed facilities, please call the Ombudsman at 1-309-829-6018
Service Area: Champaign and Piatt Counties
Fees: None
Intake Process: In order to report suspected abuse, call 217-352-5100.  After hours or for those who do not live in Champaign or Piatt counties call 1-866-800-1409

Senior Transportation

Stay safe.  Save money.  Ride with us.

Driving is a major part of our society.  We’re so used to just getting in the car whenever we want to and going where we need to go.  But, sometimes it’s just not safe to drive any longer due to arthritis, slower reflexes, poor eye sight,, or other physical problems.  Sometimes we’re just not comfortable driving any longer.  And sometimes, we decide that it is just too expensive to keep up a car, licenses, and insurance any longer.

It can be scary. How will you get where you need to go?  Will you have to depend on family and friends until they cringe when you call?

In Champaign County, older adults have an alternative.  Senior Transportation can provide you up to two rides per week.  Although primarily for medical, business, and grocery trips, one of these rides can be for something that improves your quality of life–a hair appointment, going to a volunteer site, visiting a spouse in the nursing home, or going shopping to name a few possibilities.

Rides are provided by our exceptional group of volunteers whenever possible.  These volunteer rides are provided at no cost to you.  We can also provide cab rides for which we pay half the fare.  If you have an MTD Dash Pass, it will cover the other half of the cost (up to a certain amount per year) or you can pay that half out of your own pocket.  If you need help getting a Dash Pass, our Senior Counseling and Advocacy staff will be glad to help you get one.

Eligibility: Age 60 or older

Service Area: Champaign County

Fees: Donations gladly accepted; volunteer rides provided at no cost; see above for cab fare fees

Intake Process: Call the Senior Transportation Coordinator for more information or to register
