Friendly Caller Program

Sometimes having a friendly voice to talk to can make all the difference.

  • Adults age 55+ volunteer to provide regular phone socialization to another older adult.

  • All volunteers are trained and receive ongoing support by Family Service staff to ensure a good match and a positive experience.

  • Similarly, all participants are assigned to a Family Service caseworker to help address program issues or other appropriate life goals, if desired.

  • Friendly callers are matched by staff based on volunteers’ availability, participant’s preferred schedule, and common interests.

  • Friendly Caller Coordinator facilitates the initial matching phone call, assisting with building rapport and setting an agreed upon schedule.

  • Participants receive a call once or twice a week and chat about common interests. *Call frequency varies and is agreed on during the initial matching phone call.

  • Friendly calls often increase both parties’ social network, provide emotional support, and improve their quality of life.

  • Friendly Callers is an approved RSVP (Retired & Volunteer Program) station; volunteers are encouraged but not required to sign-up with RSVP and report your time as it earns national recognition and funding for senior volunteerism in our community.

Initially I wasn’t sure if we’d have enough to talk about, but it’s worked out because we share a variety of interests including music, health, history and current events.
